Pipe Splitting

Pipe Splitting is a type of Trenchless Pipe Replacement.

graphics-pipebursting2The Plumber’s Plumber is proud to offer the process of pipe splitting, making available various advantages and savings over conventional excavation methods for replacing service lines. It reduces excavation and restoration costs (provides savings of about 15% to 20% over traditional construction methods), it reduces disruption to traffic and businesses, it reduces risk of third-party damage and savings can increase to up to 30% for pipes under dense pavement, expensive landscaping, or in heavy traffic locations.

In the method of pipe splitting, the splitting machine is pulled by a winch through the old pipe meant to be renewed. During this procedure, the old pipe is destroyed by dynamic impact energy and the fractured particles are pushed into the surrounding soil, while the new line, in the same width or one size larger, is pulled in at the same time with the use of a steel cable that is pushed through the existing host pipe and attached to the splitting head. At the other end of the cable is the unique pulling device which makes the replacement of the new line possible without trenching the entire floor.  After the trunk line is in place, we make the necessary tie-ins with the appropriate fittings, clean outs, and transition couplings.

Recent developments in tool development are leading to additional benefits.  With currently available technologies, new pipe can be equal to or greater than (up-sizing) the diameter of the old pipe. In addition, pipe-splitting systems are effective in a variety of environments, including compressible soils.

There are also safety advantages. For example, using the same host pipe as a conduit for the new polyethylene replacement pipe reduces the risk of third-party damage within crowded rights-of-way.

With only a small hole on both ends we can replace old outdated drain pipes.  Great for homes, mobile home parks, office buildings, apartment complexes and many other customers who want to save landscaping and not disrupt business.  We are equipped to work in wide open areas and tight spaces, performing subsurface excavation even inside buildings.
